Main Street is making a difference in downtown Marengo. Check us out! |
Marengo Main Street's committees don't believe in holding a bunch of meetings where things may or may not get accomplished. We strive to use our time wisely.
Our committees meet only once a month, for about an hour. (The one exception is the Promotions Committee when we have a big event coming in the next week or two.) Volunteers choose the projects they want to work on, and most of their assignments can be accomplished on their own time, at home. You can expect to put in another 1-4 hours per month on these tasks.
Work is done by following Main Street's established "Four- Point Approach," which distributes our tasks to these four committees:
Design Committee
(handbook)
this committee works
to get Main Street into top physical shape. Historic preservation is
key.
Economic Restructuring Committee
(handbook)
improves the
downtown's economic base by assisting and recruiting businesses.
Organization Committee
(handbook)
gets everyone working
toward the same goal and assembling the human and financial
resources needed to implement a Main Street revitalization program.
This is the administrative committee, making sure everything proceeds
on schedule.
Promotion Committee
(handbook)
markets the district's
unique assets to bring people downtown. Sells a positive image of
the commercial district and encourages consumers and investors to
live, work, shop, play and invest in the Main Street district.
We're looking to raise our online profile. We need someone to set up and manage pages for us on Yahoo & Google maps, Facebook, MySpace and others.
We also want to know about cool tools that are available to help get the word out about Main Street and keep our residents up-to-date on what we're doing. If you enjoy surfing, this would be a great match for you. 1-4 hours/month.
Photographer/ Videographer
Pretty self-explanatory. Attend our events and take pictures or film for us to use on our website and in promotional materials. Get your pics in the paper! Work with our Online Resources Coordinator to get pictures and film posted online. Digital camera required. Hours needed are during special events (see Calendar of Events for dates and times.)
Write up stories for submission to our website, the Northwest Herald, and other news outlets both on and offline. Write press releases announcing our events and accomplishments. Develop relationships with editors and other pros. 1-4 hours/month
Marketing & Advertising Specialists
Got a knack for headlines? How about ad layouts? Do you have fundraising in your blood? Then this is the place for you. We prepare over a dozen print ads, direct mail promotional pieces, and posters to advertise our events every year. Help us and help yourself--by expanding your portfolio!
We also need ideas. We're always testing new events and new ways to partner with other businesses and organizations. If you enjoy brainstorming (and then implementing!) this could be your perfect fit. 1-2 hours/month, with the potential for more work during "Special Events season"
Without our committees, we're nothing. And committees can't run without chairs. As a chair, you will be responsible for preparing & running meetings, creating and following an annual work plan, and participating as a member of the Board of Directors. This position is important. It carries more responsibility (and the potential for more achievement). 2-6 hours/month, which includes committee and Board meetings.
Help us design effective posters and print ads. Work with our writers to come up with eye-catching notices that really get the word out. 1-2 hours/month, with the potential for more work during "Special Events season"
A perfect position for someone with an interest in political science or city management.
Part of the reason we've been successful is the highly effective and cordial relationship we have forged with the City of Marengo. In order for that to continue, we must maintain consistent connection with the folks at City Hall.
Our liaison will, along with our Executive Director, attend City Council meetings; maintain contact with the Police, Fire and Building departments; and report back to the Marengo Main Street Board of Directors on all findings. 1-3 hours/month
MCHS is a valuable member of the community, and we want to maintain open lines of communication with its students and staff. Our liaison will keep us posted on events and issues affecting the school, and report back to their fellow students what is happening on Main Street. 1-3 hours/month, including our monthly Board Meeting
Committee Member
We currently have openings on the Design, Promotions and Organization committees. You can read more about what they do on our main Volunteers page. 1-4 hours/month, mostly on your own time
